The Town of McCandless is protected from fire and other civil emergencies by a corps of volunteers--100% volunteers who receive no monetary reimbursement for their services.  The town's fire corps is comprised of three independent but mutually-supporting companies which operate four physical stations throughout the town.  Each of these companies hold training sessions every Tuesday evening, with the third Tuesday of each month reserved for "business" meetings, where the companies take care of administrative matters.  We invite you to spend a few minutes exploring our sites to learn about these companies.  What, exactly, do they do?  What types of equipment do they use?  What sort of training is required?  What can you do to help?

Highland Vol. Fire Dept.

The HIGHLAND VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT is located near the former Espe Elementary School, just off Highland Road at 8705 Harold Place.  This station has just completed an extensive renovation project to better house its four firefighting vehicles and active firefighters.  One very important piece of equipment in the Highland stable is an engine sporting a 105-foot ladder/tower that enables Highland to reach the tallest buildings in our town and in neighboring communities.  Highland VFD is led by Chief Paul J. Nye and President Shawn O'Brien.  Highland has a program for Junior Firefighters, who may join the department at the age of 16 in order to learn the art of firefighting without being exposed to life-threatening risks (Senior Firefighters must be at least 18 years old).  Highland VFD has several active female firefighters as well as an Associate program which accommodates individuals who wish to participate in the department in a non-firefighting role.

Ingomar Vol. Fire Co. #2
www.IingomarFire.org

INGOMAR VOLUNTEER FIRE COMPANY #2 operates two distinct stations: the Main Hall is located in Ingomar proper, on Harmony Road (near the "7-11" convenience store); and the Ingomar Substation on US Rt. 19  at the top of Pine Creek Hill near Wexford (the former Ingomar VFC#1 is now known as Franklin Park VFD).  The Substation was commissioned in 1981 to provide quicker response to the McCandless business district.  Ingomar's Main Hall houses four firefighting vehicles, including an all-terrain "brush fire" vehicle;  a Special Services Command/Rescue vehicle (mounting the Hurst "Jaws of Life" tool, a lighting tower, and a "cascade" system for refilling the breathing apparatus air tanks used by firefighters); a pumper engine with a 55-foot aerial "snorkel;" and an attack engine.  The Ingomar Substation is home to an attack engine and a light rescue vehicle which also mounts a lighting tower and carries the Hurst tool.  The Chief of Ingomar VFC is Greg Quatchak, its President is Chuck Titley.  The minimum age for membership in Ingomar VFC is 18.

Peebles District Vol. Fire Dept.

The PEEBLES DISTRICT VOLUNTEER FIRE COMPANY is near the La Roche College baseball fields, on Duncan Avenue, and operates four firefighting vehicles.  One of their twin pumpers functions as a heavy rescue vehicle and is equipped with state-of-the art extrication equipment and tools, including the "Jaws of Life."  Also in Peebles' inventory is a 1996 Ford F-350 and a 1953 Mack Convertible Engine, which while still carried on the active roles is used primarily for public service details, such as parades.  Peebles maintains a specially constructed training building on their grounds: this is a two-story concrete block building used by all of McCandless' fire companies for realistic training involving  smoke &  water flow in a controlled environment.  Peebles District VFD also has active female firefighters, a Junior Firefighter program and an Associate program.  The top leadership posts at Peebles are occupied by Chief Bob Jeke and President Tim Hanke.
